Samuel Frost was born in Sheffield and probably baptised on 13 January 1790, the son of Samuel (a cutler) and Susannah. He was listed in 1828 as a manufacturer of table knives and forks in Broad Lane. In the 1830s and 1840s, his Broad Lane Works manufactured table, palette, farriers’, cooks’ knives, besides silver-plated steel knives and forks. In 1839, he was listed as a manufacturer of self-defence knives, daggers, and Spanish dirks. This suggests an American connection – perhaps through John Askham, who acquired the firm in about 1850. Samuel Frost, who lived in Prospect Terrace, Crookesmoor, then retired. He died on 19 December 1853, aged 64, and was buried at St George’s churchyard, Portobello.
