Richard Helliwell (born c.1835) apparently worked at Joseph Rodgers & Sons. In 1861, he was living in Broomhall Street and working as a hosier and pen knife cutler. In 1863, he advertised as maker of fruit, paper, pencil, rule, lock, sneck, fly-open, sportsman’s and ‘every description of first-class spring knives’. It proved to be a short-lived venture. In 1868, he was listed as a spring knife manufacturer, residing in Walkley Road. However, by 1871 he had moved to Buxton and henceforth worked as a watchmaker.
