This spring-knife cutler died on 3 March 1837, aged 67. The Sheffield Independent, 1 April 1837, reported that he worked for Messrs Thomas Nowill & Son, High Street, for 56 years: ‘As a workman in producing gold and silver fruit and fancy penknives, Sheffield never yet saw his equal. The beauty and elegance of his designs, the neatness and truth of his work, and the richness and taste he displayed in the ornamental part, were superior to those of any other artisan in his line this town ever produced’. He was buried in St Paul’s churchyard, Sheffield.
