This firm was a brass and German silver founder and manufacturer of scales, springs, shield, guards, and caps. It was first listed in 1854 under John Dewsnap and James Dewsnap. John was a scale and spring forger, who later joined his brother at 10 St Thomas Street (where James operated a successful case manufactory). The partnership was listed into the 1870s, with John apparently operating Dewsnap Bros. John Dewsnap, ‘scale manufacturer’, Redhill, died on 12 October 1878, aged 64. His burial was in the General Cemetery. He left under £3,000. The firm apparently passed to Joseph Bowler (see J. Dewsnap Bowler), who had married John Dewsnap’s daughter, Mary, in 1864. However, in 1882 the stock of Dewsnap Bros, 10 St Thomas Street, was auctioned (Sheffield Independent, 25 March 1882). Joseph Bowler continued under his own name as a cutlery scale and spring maker.
