This company was apparently founded after the First World War – and was melting crucible steel at Wellmeadow Works by 1924. The founder was George Sorby (1885-1938), who was born at Sheffield, the son of Walter and Mary. Walter was from Clayton, Doncaster, but by 1901 was a crucible melter in a Sheffield steel works – a trade followed by George. The latter was listed as a crucible steel merchant in 1925 – then operated a crucible furnace in Brown Street. He lived at Vainor Road, Hillborough, and died on 8 August 1938. He left £4,218. The firm was still at Brown Street after WWII. It was dubbed Argus Steel Works, but was probably a typical backstreet operation – melting crucible steel, but factoring most of the tools it advertised (using the ‘Crusader’ brand). By 1951, the address was Furnival Road. It was wound up in 1966.
