Frederick W. Shirtcliffe (1823-1897) was the son of Joseph (a cutler) and Sarah. He was apparently the brother of W. R. Shirtcliffe. He started his career as a pearl and ivory carver. In 1871, he was listed as a manufacturer of plated dessert knives and forks, fish carvers, fish eating cutlery, and butter knives, Havelock Works, Leadmill Road. He employed six men and two boys. His wife, Harriet, died in Alexandra Road, Heeley, ‘very suddenly’ on 12 July 1879, aged 53. Frederick continued at 41 and 43 Leadmill Street, but in 1888 Frederick Shirtcliffe was listed at No. 43 as a sheep shears manufacturer. Frederick W. Shirtcliffe apparently retired in the early 1890s. He died in Shrewsbury Hospital, Sheffield, on 24 March 1897, aged 74, leaving £162.
